Coming to Oxford, I’ve found it’s easy to get swept up in what I can only call the “Oxford Bubble”. A suddenly massive workload, a surprisingly strong social scene, and living in halls (especially as a fresher) for the first time is an experience like no other university. From Oxford-exclusive terminology to traditions like matriculation, unique things about Oxford can create this bubble, which can sometimes be difficult to step out of. So, how do we keep ourselves grounded, whilst still enjoying everything Oxford has to offer?

First, stay connected with home. Whether this be a trip home for the day or a FaceTime with friends (my go-to as I live up North!), speaking with friends and family can help you break up the constant lock-in, or cheer you up if you’re feeling down.

Second, get outside. I personally have found it is so easy to stay within (what can sometimes be) the confines of college, where you have everything from your teaching to your meals. Make time to study in a café that’s in an area you wouldn’t usually go, or if that’s too overwhelming, go to your local. Go on a walk, or take the long route to your lectures, just to get some variety in your day.

Third, do something new. This could be taking up a new sport, going to an event that interests you, basically saying yes to something you wouldn’t usually! Oxford has so many things to offer, and even if work feels too busy to engage, doing at least one non-work-related thing consistently can have a really positive impact on your mental health.

In short, the “Oxford Bubble” is a unique way of life that can be difficult to break out of, especially when it is so easy to absorb yourself in it. But living outside of it is essential sometimes. Enjoy everything Oxford has to offer, work hard, but take a break too!
